Machining of materials is done to get a high surface finish, requires tolerance and complex geometry shape which is difficult to obtain without machining. In a machining operation, metal is removed in the form of chips to get the required final shape. A cutting tool is required to cut the material. The cutting tool has some features like rake angle, clearance angle and lip angle.
A general cutting operation such as milling or turning is 3D operations and called Oblique cutting and it is very difficult to analyze because of three-dimensional operation. To simplify the analysis, the cutting operation is considered as Orthogonal cutting in which the cutting edge is perpendicular to cutting velocity.

In metal cutting, operation chips are formed due to the plastic deformation of the material in the shear zone. The actual separation of material starts from the tool-tip interface as yielding or fracture depends upon material condition. The chip starts flowing over the rake surface and lifted away from the tool, hence resultant curvature of the chip becomes curl.

Chips can be of three types-
  • Continuous Chips
  • Discontinuous Chips
  • Chips with BUE (Build up edge)
Tool Designation- 
  • ASA System- The American Standard Association designation of the tool nomenclature based on geometrical nature and not relatable to the machining process.
  • ORS System- In the Orthogonal Rake System, the actual cutting plane is utilized.
