An engine is a device that convert one form of energy to other and if the engine converts thermal energy into mechanical work, such engine is called Heat engine.
Heat engine transforms the chemical energy of fuel into thermal energy to perform work. They can be classified as Internal combustion engine (IC Engine) and External combustion engine (EC Engine).
In an internal combustion engine, combustion takes place within the engine while in external combustion engine combustion takes place outside the engine.
IC engine cycle consists of four sequence separate processes -
- Intake- Fresh charge enter inside the cylinder of the IC engine
- Compression- Compression take place as piston moves toward the top dead center (TDC)
- Expansion- Expansion takes place when the piston moves toward the bottom dead center (BDC)
- Exhaust- Burnt exhaust goes out from the cylinder.
